Why go there

Murrumbateman is a small, former goldmining town. Today the town's fortunes are linked to a thriving wine industry – more than 24 wineries operate in the region, many with open cellar doors.

History

In 1821, Hamilton Hume and his exploratory party were the first Europeans to explore the Yass Plains. Hume returned with William Hovell in 1824 while mapping out the first route from Yass to Port Phillip Bay (before Melbourne was founded).

Settlers followed with their flocks of sheep and started an industry centred on fine merino wool. Gold was mined in the surrounding hills in the 1840s and 1850s bringing further prosperity to the tiny settlement.
